A gutter system is foundation protection. Everything a roof sheds has to go somewhere, and where it goes decides whether the foundation stays stable.
A roof collects a considerable volume of water and concentrates it at the edges. Gutters carry it, but downspouts and discharge decide whether it leaves the building or soaks into the soil sitting against the foundation.
That soil is the reason gutters matter structurally. Soil that repeatedly saturates and dries expands and contracts, and a foundation sitting on it records that movement as cracking and settling. Discharging roof water next to a foundation is one of the most common causes of foundation movement we see.
Sizing matters too. An undersized system overflows in the rain that actually matters, which is exactly when overflow does damage.
